Jon is the Co-Founder, vice president and artistic director for Blice Edwards, with emphasis on “Artistic”. He carefully researches every detail of significance for a project and designs with that in mind. Jon took a more traditional route into his career, completing a BFA in advertising design, illustration and fine arts from Columbus College of Art, graduating in 1998. After 5 years in New York City working for a package design firm, Paul Maurice and Associates in Soho, he moved back to Indianapolis. He knew that to continue as a graphic artist meant additional school and what he wanted to focus on was drawing and painting. He found work as a backdrop and prop painter for The Set-Up Company developing his skills in large mural-styled design and painting, which he really enjoyed. By chance he ran into Chris, whom at the time was looking for someone that could paint animals as part of a job. Chris and Jon immediately recognized that their skills complemented each other’s and they were providing a service that was unique to Indianapolis. The business has continued to grow through his exceptional artistic vision, research for the projects and ultimately the implementation of the plan. If Chris can envision it – Jon can paint it and definitely, always exceeds the client’s expectations as can be seen in the beautiful murals throughout Indianapolis, such as Angie’s List Corporate Headquarters, Posh Petals, Mama Carolla’s and Good Morning Mama’s. You will find Jon is just an all around good guy and although he would never brag about his artistic abilities it is apparent in his work and by the numerous recognition Blice Edward’s murals have gotten.
What were your childhood dreams (including, but not limited to being a superhero or princess)? A trapeze artist, no joke, until my parents said “no”, I am drawn to many styles of art!
Who is / are your favorite artist(s), author(s), book(s), movie(s), and/or musician(s) (and why, or how do they inspire you)? My favorite artists are: Matisse, Gaugin, Cezanne, Paul Cley, Christo, Henry Moore and Alexander Caulder. I find inspiration in all kinds of art and love it all.
Where do you like to go for inspiration? I find my inspiration by taking bike rides. The beauty of the landscapes that I ride through and the energy that I derive from it keeps me going and keeps my spirit grateful and joyful. Christopher is inspired by the things and people around him and is always looking for the next thing. He is the engine that keeps our business going, so I am always inspired by the drive he has.
What are your future plans / dreams for (1 year, 5 years, 10 years, 100 years from now)? How are you making them come true? I want to continue to expand Blice Edwards and have an even bigger presence in Indianapolis and beyond. We are excited to be planning the move of our office / studio to a public location. We will have our business office and design center with samples and documentation of our work. We will have a large wall dedicated to painting murals on canvas. We hope to host an open house when it is complete, we will keep you posted!
Describe your workspace. What is outside your window (assuming you have one)? I love my workspace, it is a converted RV garage and in warm weather I can open the door and feel like I am working outside. In the winter it can be a little cold and there are no windows, which makes it hard but I like the fact that I have no commute.
Describe your perfect day? Wake up at 7 am after 8 good hours of sleep. Have a fruit smoothie and some toast with peanut butter. Go on a long bike ride with friends. Have a lazy afternoon by the pool. Go out to dinner and eat some fresh fish and veggies with a glass of wine to drink. See a show, maybe some theater, concert, play, musical or ballet and – then fly back to Indiana!
